Mount Union, Pa. — Mount Union’s final staff spotlight for the 2026 school year is Kistler Elementary paraprofessional Deb Snyder, who students affectionately refer to as “Miss Debbie.” She has worked for the district for 25 years at both Shirley and Kistler Elementary Schools. She explained that she chose this career path because of her love for children. Ms. Snyder also shared that having a child at home made the work schedule a good fit for her family.
What Ms. Snyder enjoys most about her job is “the kiddos.” She explained, “Seeing their accomplishments, overcoming challenges, and finding their potential is rewarding to me.” One of her favorite memories is treating students to candy every Friday as a small reward for making it through the week. “They always ask, ‘Is it candy day, Miss Debbie?’”
Although Ms. Snyder finds the job very rewarding, she acknowledged that it comes with challenges as well. She said, “It is very important to stay positive and upbeat every day, even on difficult days. I also make it a priority to learn every child’s name because I want each child to feel special, valued, and important. Building that personal connection helps kids feel seen and cared for, which then creates a supportive learning environment.”
Outside of work, Ms. Snyder enjoys soccer and traveling. “My joy is traveling to professional soccer games!” she shared. Ms. Snyder believes her job is special because of the relationships she has built with students, families, and coworkers in both elementary schools. She explained that everyone works together to create a positive and supportive environment for students.
Lastly, Ms. Snyder said one of the things she cares most about is giving hugs to students who may need them. She explained, “I’ve always given hugs my whole career, even when they are said not to, because sometimes you are the only hug that child gets!”
Ms. Snyder is remembered and loved by many former and current students. Mount Union’s elementary schools are fortunate to have such a caring paraprofessional dedicated to creating a nurturing environment for students.
